How long does a ZYN last?

A ZYN pouch usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes in your mouth, and Poison Control advises never keeping one in for more than 60. You'll usually feel the first effects within a few minutes, but nicotine in your blood keeps rising for as long as the pouch stays in and peaks around the time you take it out. The buzz peaks within about 5 minutes and doesn't last long, while the nicotine takes hours to leave your body: its level halves roughly every two hours, and tests can pick up its breakdown product, cotinine, for 3 to 4 days.
The same basics apply to other nicotine pouches, though exact timing varies by brand, strength and how long you keep one in.
How long do ZYNs last in your mouth?
The usual time is 30 to 45 minutes, up to 60, according to Poison Control. ZYN's UK site recommends up to 30 minutes and says a pouch is finished when the flavor fades.
Flavor isn't a reliable signal for nicotine, though. Nicotine keeps leaving the pouch and passing through your gum for the whole time it's in. In a study funded by Swedish Match, ZYN's maker, people kept a ZYN pouch in for a full hour. Nicotine in their blood kept climbing the whole time and peaked at about 61 minutes for 3 mg and 66 minutes for 6 mg, right around when the pouch came out. So a ZYN pouch that has lost its taste can still be delivering nicotine.
How long should you keep a ZYN in?
Usually 30 to 45 minutes, and no more than 60. Within that, there's no correct time: the longer a pouch stays in, the more nicotine leaves it. In the Swedish Match study, after an hour about 1.5 mg of nicotine had come out of a 3 mg pouch and about 3.5 mg out of a 6 mg pouch. A shorter session releases less. For what that adds up to over a day, see how much nicotine is in your ZYN pouches per day.
Keeping a pouch in longer has two costs. You take in more nicotine per pouch, and the gum under it stays pressed and exposed for longer. That spot is where pouch users tend to get irritation, white patches and gum recession, which I cover in are ZYNs bad for your gums.
If you're trying to cut down, a shorter time per pouch is one way to lower your nicotine without changing your count. When you switch to a lower strength or use fewer pouches, don't keep each one in longer, or you'll take back the nicotine you cut. For a full plan, see how to quit ZYN nicotine pouches, and what withdrawal feels like as you cut down.
How long to keep a ZYN in the first time
If you don't use nicotine, there's no reason to start: the FDA says its authorization doesn't make ZYN safe, and adults who don't use tobacco shouldn't start.
If you've already tried one, you probably noticed that the first pouch hits harder than you expected. Your body has no tolerance yet, so the same dose that a regular user barely feels can bring on nausea, dizziness, sweating or a racing heart. Poison Control advises new users to keep a pouch in for a shorter time, 5 to 15 minutes. If you start to feel sick, take it out. See how long ZYN nausea lasts below.
How long does it take for a ZYN to kick in?
Most people feel a ZYN within a few minutes. Nicotine from a pouch passes through the lining of your mouth, and pouches are made alkaline because nicotine crosses mucous membranes more easily at a higher pH (Benowitz, 2009).
In an independent 2024 study, 15 smokers who weren't used to oral nicotine kept a pouch in for 20 minutes. The head buzz from pouches peaked at 5 minutes, and heart rate started to rise at about the same time. Nicotine in the blood kept rising after that, peaking at a median of 20 minutes for a 6 mg pouch. A cigarette, for comparison, peaked at 5 minutes.
So a pouch kicks in fast, but it delivers its nicotine slowly. That's why it can feel like the effect is wearing off while the dose is still building.
How long does ZYN nausea last?
Mild nausea from a ZYN usually starts to ease once you take the pouch out, because no more nicotine is going in. Nobody has measured how long pouch nausea typically lasts. In cases reported by Poison Control, even teenagers with nicotine poisoning from pouches felt better within a few hours.
What helps:
- take the pouch out and rinse your mouth with water
- sit or lie down until the dizziness passes
- sip water and skip the next pouch
Stronger symptoms, such as vomiting, a fast heartbeat, tremors or heavy sweating, mean you've had more nicotine than your body can handle. See signs you've had too many ZYNs at once. If symptoms are strong or don't ease, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (US). Call 911 for trouble breathing, fainting or seizures.
How long does a ZYN buzz last?
There isn't a reliable fixed duration, but the noticeable buzz is usually brief and peaks early. In an independent 2024 study, it peaked 5 minutes after the pouch went in, well before nicotine in the blood peaked.
Nicotine stays around much longer than the feeling: see how long ZYN stays in your system.
Why ZYNs stop giving you a buzz
With regular use your body builds tolerance to some of nicotine's effects, and the buzz gets weaker. Tolerance partly resets overnight, which is why the first pouch of the morning often hits hardest (Benowitz, 2009).
When the buzz fades, many people chase it with a stronger pouch, two at once or a longer session. That raises the nicotine and the tolerance with it. If you've gone from 3 mg to 6 mg or higher this way, the quit plan gives stepping back down a week of its own.
How long does ZYN stay in your system?
Nicotine from a ZYN is mostly gone within about half a day, but the body breaks it down into cotinine, which can show up on a test for several days.
Nicotine's half-life averages about 2 hours (Benowitz, 2009), and two pouch studies (Lunell et al., 2020; Mallock-Ohnesorg et al., 2024) measured roughly the same: 2 to 2.5 hours. After about 10 hours, five half-lives, only a few percent of a pouch's nicotine is left.
Cotinine lasts much longer. Its half-life averages about 16 hours and ranges from 8 to more than 30 hours from person to person. According to a 2020 review by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, cotinine in blood, saliva and urine takes roughly 80 to 100 hours, three to four days, to fall below the cutoff that separates users from non-users. Because some people break cotinine down much more slowly, the authors allow 6 to 7 days when checking whether someone has quit. These estimates come from smokers; nobody has measured them in pouch users.
Hair works differently. Cotinine builds up in hair as it grows, about 1 cm a month, so a hair test can reflect nicotine use over months (Florescu et al., 2009).
Will ZYN show up on a drug test?
Not on a standard one. The federal workplace drug panel looks for marijuana, cocaine, opioids, amphetamines, PCP and fentanyl, and nicotine isn't on it. Finding nicotine takes a separate cotinine test. Some surgeons check urine cotinine on the day of surgery and may cancel the operation if it's positive (Michaels et al., 2018).
A cotinine test doesn't tell where the nicotine came from (SRNT, 2020), so ZYN shows up the same way as cigarettes, vapes or nicotine gum.
How long does a can of ZYN last?
It depends on how many pouches you use a day. A regular US can of ZYN has held 15 pouches, and Philip Morris International (PMI), ZYN's owner, is moving 3 mg and 6 mg cans to 20 pouches in late 2026.
| Pouches per day | 15-count can | 20-count can |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 5 days | about 7 days |
| 5 | 3 days | 4 days |
| 10 | 1.5 days | 2 days |
| 15 | 1 day | about 1.3 days |
| 20 | under 1 day | 1 day |
Check the count on your own can: it differs by product and country. When cans grow from 15 to 20 pouches, a can lasting the same number of days means you're using more.
Counting individual pouches gives you a clearer daily number. For what your daily number means, see how many ZYNs a day is too much.
Frequently asked questions
Can you eat with a ZYN in?
You can, but most people take it out first, since chewing can tear the pouch or make it easy to swallow. Coffee and soda may also lower how much nicotine you absorb: they did with nicotine gum, though nobody has tested this with pouches.
Can you sleep with a ZYN in?
You can, but it's a sign of strong dependence, and it keeps the pouch against the same spot of gum for hours. See is it bad to sleep with a ZYN in.
Can you reuse a ZYN?
No, ZYN pouches are made for one use. A used pouch still has some nicotine left, but it has lost most of its flavor, and a second round mostly adds more time with a pouch pressed against your gum.
What happens if you swallow a ZYN?
For an adult, swallowing a single pouch is unlikely to cause poisoning. Poison Control advises rinsing your mouth and watching for symptoms, and getting medical help right away if you've swallowed several. For a child, a single pouch can be toxic: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away, even if the child seems fine.
